4 Things Every Pastor and Church Leader Should Know About Themselves

Who are you

In just under a week, we will be entering the year of 2015.  Already, people are beginning to think about their New Year’s resolutions.  In a few short days, the gym where I work out will be filled with men, women, and teenagers who have made a resolution to change their lives.  By February, most of them will no longer enter the doors of the gym – their hopes of a different life abandoned until the next year when the process starts all over again.

The passion for improving our lives, however, should be something that every pastor and church leader desires on a daily basis.  We should constantly be seeking ways of being more effective in leading the ministries that God has given to us.  For more information on seeking continual growth in your personal life, see my post on “Constantly Improving Your Position.”    To that end, in order for a church leadership team to function at their best, they need to understand how God has created them with their spiritual gifts and individual personality types.  The more you understand yourself and your leadership team, the better you can work together in leading your local church.

Here are four assessments that you can use to better understand the personalities and gifts of your team.  Each assessment will help you learn more about the four things that you as a church leader should know about yourself and the rest of your team:  spiritual gifts, personality, strengths, and how you interact with others.  The more your understand how you think, communicate, and interact with others, the more effective your team leadership will become.  As I understand that we have limited budgets with which to work, I’ve listed these in the order of the most “bang for your buck.”  Each successive assessment in the list will build upon the information in the previous assessment.  So, start at number one and go to the next assessment as you are able.

  1. P.L.A.C.E. Assessment for $14.95 – includes both a spiritual gifts inventory and a DISC profile.  This assessment will give you a great understanding of your spiritual gifts and a basic understanding of your personality through a basic DISC assessment.
  2. Clifton Strengths Finder Assessment for $9.99 for a list of your top 5 strengths or $89 for a list of all your 34 strengths ratings.  According to their website, “Gallup research proves that people succeed when they focus on what they do best. When they identify their talents and develop them into strengths, people are more productive, perform better, and are more engaged.  Gallup’s Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment is the first step in helping people identify their talents. Clifton StrengthsFinder results give people a way to discuss and develop their unique combination of skills, talents, and knowledge — also known as strengths.”
  3. DiSC Profile for $35.95.  According to their website, “DiSC is a personal assessment tool used to improve work productivity, teamwork and communication. DiSC is non-judgmental and helps people discuss their behavioral differences.”
  4. Myers-Briggs Assessment for $49.95.  According to their website, “Your strengths and tendencies. How you look at things and learn and make decisions. The ways you differ from and interact with others.  These are all parts of your nature: who you are.  And when you really know yourself, the world opens up. You can make choices and trust the choices you make – in your job, your life, your relationships. Because you don’t just understand and appreciate yourself better. You understand and appreciate other people better as well.

In my own years in ministry, I have found that the more I understand how God has created me – with both strengths and weaknesses – and the more I understand how God has created those with whom I partner in ministry, the more effective we are as a team.  And, the more effective we are as a team, the more we impact the world around us for the glory of God!

  1. Just wanted to let you know that DiSC (with the small i) is the trademark of the assessment published by Wiley. It’s the leading publisher of assessments using the DISC model. P.L.A.C.E. does not offer DiSC. It offers another assessment based on the DISC model. Not all assessments using that model have been validated and tested thoroughly. I always recommend Everything DiSC Workplace as the gold standard.

    • Thanks for pointing that out. You are correct – the assessment that P.L.A.C.E. uses is NOT the official DiSC profile, but rather its own assessment tool providing similar results. In the case of my own profile, I did receive the same results. The numbers were different, but the overall DISC graph they provided did match my “official” DiSC profile. In short, P.L.A.C.E. is a great starting point, but I do recommend taking an official DiSC profile for a more accurate understanding of the temperament/personality that God has given to each of us.
